Republican Martin McLaughlin brought eight successful years of experience as Barrington Hills village president when he entered the Illinois House in 2021. Now, he’s seeking a second term in the newly drawn House Dist. 52 and his thoughtful, measured approach to state government makes him the right person for the job.

With a background in investment management, McLaughlin is particularly well suited to help address the financial issues facing the state, and his tenure at the helm in Barrington Hills was marked by his success at providing needed services while keeping taxes low. He favors the traditional limited-government positions of his party, yet — on issues including education, crime, government spending and more — he remains thoughtful and independent in working out the details of legislation and examining problems facing the state.

McLaughlin is endorsed.

According to data compiled by the FBI, Illinois is the third-most dangerous state to be a police officer. Between 2012 and 2022, there have been a total of 33 officer fatalities (14 of which were homicides) which equated to 355 deaths per 100,000 police officers in 2021. So far this year, 141 officers have been shot across the country. As more cops retire or quit the profession altogether, recruitment and retention is the biggest challenge for departments statewide according to a survey of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.

As a former mayor and head of our local police department, I can state firsthand that democrat policies that my opponent, Mary Morgan, and those like her who are soft on crime advocate for only expedites the retirement of experienced officers, exposing our families and businesses to greater harm. The Safe-T Act and its cashless bail requirement takes effect on January 1, 2023, and is opposed in all 102 counties by an overwhelming majority of states attorneys. They understand the dangerous impact of releasing violent offenders and what it will do to overwhelm our law enforcement officers, court systems and the harm it will potentially cause to individual families and businesses. It’s about time we made crime illegal again in the State of Illinois.

According to a study completed by the U.S. Education Department, math and reading scores fell dramatically for America’s school-aged children during the Covid pandemic. Reading scores saw their largest decrease in 30 years, while math scores had their first decrease in history.

Reading, math scores fell sharply during pandemic, data show – AP News

Not surprisingly, the short-sighted heavy-handed shutdown policies in our state have data that shows our children’s academic performance has declined substantially in math and reading in the past 2 years.

The long-term impact of these shutdowns and their emotional and developmental impacts will be felt by our children for years to come. The only benefit that has come from these awful decisions is that local moms and dads are calling out those responsible for poor decisions at local and state levels regarding their children’s educational well-being. It is time to show these agenda-driven politicos the door.

Currently, longtime House Speaker Mike Madigan finds himself at the center of an ongoing federal corruption probe involving ComEd and a pay-for-play scheme in which all the perks where allegedly steered to him in exchange for favorable legislation.

“I think it’s past time that all state legislators take a look at themselves in the mirror and make a decision about if what they’re doing is in the best interest of the state or themselves,” McLaughlin added. “The real question for Mike Madigan is how you can not feel responsible for where we are right now after having been in charge all this time.
